It’s Sunday, August 26th and I’m frantically working down my long list of things to do before I go off the grid for a week.  Sending this post out into cyberspace to be posted on my sister Val’s 40th birthday is on my list.  (I love the WordPress “Schedule” option!)

Happy, Happy 4oth Birthday Valerie Russo!  How in the heck did we get to be in our 40’s already?  One of my fondest memories of us as kids is riding you around our neighborhood on my banana seat bike!

We are sisters and I love you!  I’m toasting to you today on the playa in my own special way and sending you lots and lots of love and wishes for many firsts this year and always…

I found this Happy Birthday tiara at the Alameda Flea Market many moons ago, there were actually a handful of them and I grabbed every single one because I thought they would make the most perfect birthday gifts for friends.  I, of course, saved one for myself!  The skull and crossbones ring was something I could not pass up at LF on Union in San Francisco last year.  Both are really the perfect birthday bling for a silly girl like me.

Today is my 41st birthday and I don’t feel 41.  Frankly, I don’t know how this happened but I like what’s happening very much.  As the years pass I grow more and more comfortable in my skin and this is the best birthday gift a girl could ever get.

Think about not taking yourself so seriously…

On my docket today?  A Cibo mocha with extra chocolate, acting like a 16-year-old groupie at the ATOC Stage 2 start, a whole package of Birthday Oreos for lunch, a few cupcakes before dinner and lots of bubbles with the boy I love!

Here’s hoping you act like it’s your birthday EVERY day!

Yep, that’s me.  I think I was about four or so.  This photo is one of my very favorite personal possessions.  I know this sounds silly but first of all it’s one of the very few photos I have of me as a little person and second of all, it reminds me of just how sassy I have always been.

When we are little we are so full of confidence, unstoppable, inquisitive, full of love, and life and character.  And then, through the course of “no’s” and heartbreak, and reality, this gets tempered a bit and we become grown-ups.

I’m on the brink of celebrating another birthday.  In my family birthdays are a big deal, and I blame this on my mother and my grandmother who made everything about birthdays special, and who started the tradition of giving everyone in the family a gift on someone’s birthday.

If you aren’t a big birthday person (and I don’t believe such a person really exists) you might want to avoid reading my next few posts because my birthday is on Monday and I feel a string of birthday-related posts coming on…

On this brink of my birthday I find myself thinking about the things I would tell my 4-year-old self if I could, knowing what I know now.  I’m not the type of person to want to rewrite history or who lives with much regret, but there are a few things I would tell myself that might’ve made life a little easier – and a lot happier.

1.  Everything happens just as it should so don’t worry when things don’t go your way.

2.  Love as much as you can even if it hurts sometimes, and especially if people look at you like you’re crazy.  (Love those people extra hard.)

3.  You are the bravest girl I know.  Do as many scary things as you can, your courage will amaze you.

4.  Be comfy in your skin cuz it’s great skin to be in.

5.  Surround yourself with people who love you and it’s okay that not everyone loves you.  (Boy did it take me a long time to really believe this.)

6.  Life is precious.  Indulge, dance, play…and do these things often and with vigor.

7.  Don’t be so hard on yourself and don’t take yourself too seriously.  (My almost 41-year-old self needs to hear this one.)

I look at the photo above and I see a spunky little girlie, a girlie I know very well.  This year, for my birthday, I’m reminding myself of all of these things and of how fortunate I am to be right where I am at this moment in time, surrounded by so much love.

Wishing you lots of love, lust & butterflies…

My birthday month is off to a great start!  I’ve had a Super Moon, discovered Birthday Oreos (my favorite cookie is celebrating its 100th year this year), and today I’m starting a brand-new job!

My new adventure with Ultimat Vodka involves supporting 100 key accounts in San Francisco.  The Ultimat 100, you’ll be hearing more about this in future posts!

Today is the beginning of a new chapter, a clean slate, a big adventure…Happy Birthday to me!
